Last summer, when the grass was green and a still-new flag marked the grave, I photographed the gravestone of Prof. J.F. Stone (b. 1847, d. 1878). Stone, a Civil War veteran, was a professor at Leland University in New Orleans.
A bit of online digging revealed that, on March 3, 1878, Stone’s death was announced in the New York Times in a column on churches and ministers:
A bit more digging turned up several early photographs of Leland (here, here, and here) published in History of Louisiana Negro Baptists from 1804 to 1914, which can be read online.
